Ice cream and blood tests...

Live with two granddaughters (8 & 12 years) can be a challenge. It can also be the most amazing fun! Sunday brought a family lunch with what seemed like a busload of my inlaws, assorted cousins who we normally only see at the usual hatch/match/despatch events, so it was great to actually sit down and get to know people a bit. This wasn't very exciting for the girls, despite the fact that the nephews were accompanied by an assortment of school/college mates, all recovering from a night on the town. The girls weren't quite of an age to appreciate the plethora of muscular young men in shorts lounging about the garden - I expect there is time... However they did enjoy exploring the sister-in-law's garden which includes a paddock, a barn and enough little wooded bits to be a magical secret garden for them to let their imaginations run riot. They set up house in the barn and produced an astonishing array of buffet food - all composed of fallen leaves, flowers and grasses harvested from the paddock and rose petals collected from around the flower beds - beautifully arranged. It's a reminder of how a little imagination can go a long way when you're eight! They were both little angels and just to make the day complete they toddled off to bed without a murmer and were asleep in moments!

Today has involved them coming with me to the hospital for my regular blood test. Elder girl is not very keen on hospitals - getting an infection in a pierced ear at the age of about 5, which needed the earring to be surgically removed, left her fairly traumatised and understandably reluctant to go anywhere near such places. However, she bravely sat beside me and concentrated on her Ipod - sadly she looked up once during the process to see blood filling a sample bottle and looked away very swiftly! Smaller girl was of course fascinated by the whole thing and asked constant questions, to the amusement of the nurses. Since they were both pretty good it was of course necessary to take them into town and buy ice creams and such things....
