The social whirl

An interesting day... some long-standing friends (can't call them old!) decided for reasons unknown to tie the knot after 13 years together... so they decided to have a nice do in a nice hotel in Sunny Surrey... Now I wouldn't have said that I knew everything about them and their lives, but I never had them down as folkies - but we arrived at this very posh establishment to hear the unmistakable sound of an accordian... they organised a country dancing session, complete with folk band and caller! Great fun... and a great ice-breaker :-)
It was fun seeing people I had worked with years ago, most of whom only knew me vaguely and wouldn't have recognised me even with my own hair and no purple wig...

All was well until smaller granddaughter decided that she hadn't heard the instructions for the dance and couldn't do it and marched off the floor leaving her sister stranded - fortunately dear husband stepped into the breach and danced with her, to the accompaniment of smaller one whining about how unfair it was that she wasn't dancing... This was repeated at each of the next dances - and then, horror of horrors it was announced that there would be only two more dances and then the disco would commence... "She's had four dances and I have only had one!!!" so off goes Grandma to dance with the little darling, who marched off the floor again - this time a minute into the dance, fortunately a circle dance isn't too disrupted by this. The final dance arrived and she refused flatly to go, but wasn't going to let anyone else in the family dance either. Grandma and Big Sis went off to Strip the Willow to the very loud chorus of "I WANT TO DANCE!" - although by the time it reached my ears it had become "I WANT TO DIE" which was a bit disturbing. We stripped the willow and had quite a giggle, eventually managing to blot out the howling, but my punishment came at the end when the tantrum was released. Ten minutes of being told how evil I am is about as much as I can bear on a good day and by now this one was definitely not in that category... I marched off to say my goodbyes to our host, who was amused by the impromptu cabaret provided by the little brat... He just laughed at my apologies as his children were still sitting there like little angels... grrrrr.... :-)
Then I wandered back expecting to find little miss grumpy refusing to go home, to find that someone stole her and replaced her with Pollyanna - so much sweetness and light I nearly fainted... and she was a perfect angel all the way home, straight to bed and even bright and cheerful this morning... it's amazing what being allowed to steal Grandma's (non-alcoholic) ginger beer will do!

Anyway, from all of us here... Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Jones and we wish you all the best for a long and happy marriage - and we're really sorry about the screaming!

I have to admit that my tolerance is a bit reduced this week. I don't know whether it's the tiredness or what... today my mouth started to get sore and I developed a huge lump inside my cheek. I started to get rather worried about this, by 8pm it felt as though it was at least an inch in diameter and still growing - I really wasn't sure it would ever stop! But eventually it just collapsed and has given no trouble since. Fingers crossed... but I am not sure how long I can keep up full time Grandma duties... feeling a little bit thinly spread by now. Trouble is the house will be so quiet when they go home!
